Pacific Coast Highway will reopen to public travel at 8 a.m. Friday, ahead of Memorial Day weekend, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced today.
The iconic roadway, which was closed following the Palisades Fire, will now operate with two lanes in each direction.
The reopening comes earlier than the previously announced end-of-May deadline, following round-the-clock efforts by construction crews and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. More than 100 USACE crews have been removing nearly 1,284 truckloads of debris daily along the affected stretch.
Security Measures Remain in Place
While the highway reopens, enhanced security measures will remain in place. LAPD will maintain 24-hour checkpoints in the Palisades area, and a 25 mph speed limit will be enforced through the construction zone.
Officials advise allowing extra time for travel or seeking alternate routes, as delays are expected due to holiday traffic and ongoing repairs. Construction crews will continue working on repairs after the reopening, and drivers are urged to exercise caution in work zones, where traffic fines may be doubled.
